Newtown Sydney is more than likely the most multi-cultural and 'multi-subcultural' suburb in Australia - if not the World.
This project had its genesis as I mused on how much this world has changed in the past 50 years, and imagined how interesting it would be to see a collection of portraits of local shopkeepers from the 1960s. There is no doubt that people in 2063 will have that same thought; this project ensures that they will have comprehensive document of the Newtown Shopkeepers of 2013.
After an exhibition in 2012, it became evident that, for the project to truly become the historical document that I envisaged, greater depth was required with even more portraits, and a short personal statement from each subject to put it all in context. The additional portraits and accompanying text culminated in this limited edition book.
