Sydney Streets 1970-73 : Leon Gregory

Share

These works form part of a series of images created between 1970-1973 in the inner suburbs of Sydney.
In 2013 Leon Gregory digitised the negatives with the aim of exhibiting them for the first time and as a result they were selected as a featured exhibition of the 2014 Headon Photo Festival in Sydney.
The emergence of this work in its debut appearance sparked widespread interest in the photographic community of Sydney, resulting in substantial coverage in both print and on-line media. Further exhibitions and a book of the collection are being planned for the future. Many of these images have been acquired for the permanent collection of the State Library of NSW.

In the late 1960s Leon Gregory lived in Kings Cross working as a stage and television actor. During this period he developed an interest in documentary street  photography, producing these works.
Moving with his family to Kangaroo Valley in the mid 1970’s, he established himself as a jazz player and music tutor in the region for many years before resuming his photographic activity in recent times.
